I am often asked about escape room strategy. In order to be successful in making it out of the escape room in time. The two main train of thoughts are;
1) Stick together as a group. Solve something and move on. This has an advantage that the same puzzle is not being pondered over multiple times (wasting time) but it can also slow a group down especially if there is debating about how to solve the puzzle.
2) Divide and conquer. The group splits up and can cover more ground quickly but communication between players tends to be poor as each players is gathering information themselves and trying to listen to what the other players are shouting out.
Which is better ultimately depends on the dynamics of the particular group that is playing. One of the most easily identifiable dynamics to consider is how many alphas vs how many betas there are in a group. If there are 2 or more alphas, a divide and conquer strategy may be more a better way to go. At least there is a better chance you will still be friends after the game :)
A blend of the the 2 is probably what works best for most groups. Not necessarily a 50/50 blend. The amount of each strategy will depend on the individual group dynamics.
You may also want to shift the strategy part way though the game as needed. This will depend on the actual game itself so staying flexible to shift the strategy is always an asset.
